Stylistically, techno is, like house, generally repetitive instrumental music produced for use in a continuous DJ set. Techno first emerged in Detroit during the mid to late 1980s. The first recorded use of the word techno in reference to a genre of music was in 1988 and the initial take on techno arose from the melding of electronic music with African American music styles, including funk, house and electric jazz.
In the mid-1990s Detroit and German producers collaborated on several releases.
Unfortunately, the word techno was hijacked by mainstream media in the late 80's to generalize everything electronic.
